The intention of using probiotics is to help maintain the healthy intestinal flora that is naturally present in our body, and consequently maintain our digestive and immune systems healthy.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when ingested, exert beneficial effects on health. The human colon contains about 200 species of bacteria, whose effects on intestinal health continue to be studied. Some intestinal bacteria, such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, have health-promoting properties. Studies indicate that these beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, stimulate intestinal immunity and prevent the colonization of pathogenic organisms that cause gastric and intestinal disorders, and diarrhea. They facilitate lactose digestion, and some studies point to a role in allergy prevention, improved bowel movements, and the formation of certain vitamins. Prebiotics are non-digestible foods (soluble fibers) that, when ingested, selectively stimulate the growth and activity of bacteria residing in the intestinal colon. The ingestion of prebiotics thus increases the amount of bifidobacteria present in the body. The prebiotics in this formula are derived from fructo-oligosaccharides and arabinogalactans, selectively feeding the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species present. Prebiotics are also responsible for producing short-chain fatty acids (acetic acid, lactic acid, etc.), lowering intestinal pH, and reducing the time food remains in the intestine, thereby decreasing the production of putrefactive substances.
